Bill Would Remove Ban On Cameras in Court
Six senators and three House members have co-sponsored Senate Bill 77 in the South Dakota Legislature. It removes the legal ban on allowing cameras and broadcast coverage into lower courts. South Dakota already allows electronic coverage of the state Supreme Court. Here’s a link: Senate Bill 77.
The bill strikes the current language that forbids the taking of photos as well as radio and television broadcasting during judicial proceedings.
The bill does NOT say cameras and electronic coverage will be allowed. It simply puts the question into the lap of the courts. The state Supreme Court sets the rules for all aspects of the judicial process in the state.
